Ken Shoulder Surgery

Well it seems that age is finally catching up to me. After three seasons in the IE MSBL (along with a dozen and change from little league on) my shoulder is giving up the ghost. I have been playing in pain for about 5 years now but it has become unbearable this last season.

The MRI revealed that I have a torn labrum, severe degeneration of the shoulder, bursitis, and arthritis. So it is off to surgery I went. Three scope incisions, one two-inch incision, a debridement of the labrum, sh… Continue

Glenn Higginbotham A Colorado - Cleveland World Series? Thankfully, no.

Who would really give a damn about this? OK, it's a classic AL team with an illustrious history vs an NL team that sell tickets but has no identity. Forgive me for sounding curmudgeonly, but I MISS the dynasties. This business of parity has only diluted the game, and appeals to the short attention spans of modern sports watchers. As Brian Wilson once said, "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times".

Baseball does reflect modern sensibilities, so this is a reflection of our times. I can watch

Glenn Higginbotham 1941: The Greatest Season Ever?

That's the argument Robert Creamer presented in "Baseball in 41", which is part of my burgeoning baseball library. Apart from DiMaggio's hitting streak and Williams' .406 BA, you had a great pennant race in the NL between the Dodgers and the Cardinals.

In my PureSim version of this season, I manage the Dodgers. Before the season even started, I pulled off a major coup -- I traded a veteran pitcher to the Cardinals for a 21-year-old OF named Stan Musial. He's become an everyday starter,

Glenn Higginbotham Walter O'Malley: Villain or Scapegoat?

The more I read about O'Malley, the more I find that the real villain in the Dodgers' move to LA is a guy named Robert Moses. Moses was in charge of land development in New York, and was arguably more powerful than the mayor.

The truth of the matter is that O'Malley wanted to keep the Dodgers in Brooklyn, but wanted a new ballpark. The location he chose was set in the borough, but Moses wouldn't hear of it. Moses had other ideas for the tract of land O'Malley chose. Moses proposed

Michael Hopcroft My new experiences

Well, I now have my fukll copy of PureSDim running and it's working just splendidly. I think I've only scracthed the durface of what it can do.

There are, however, a couple of projects I wanted to try and see if they would work:

1. One of the first "modeled" associations I created was 1914, the first year of the Federal League. I still haven't quite figured out how to tell the scheduler that, no, it's THREE SEPARATE KLEAGUES not one big league nwith three eight-team divisions t… Continue

maximillian Giarratano 1970s & 1980s face pack

I have been working on these 2 decades for months. The goal is to a) get every player & b) have them with a decade specfic picture in the highest possible quality. Some of my work has already been used in the existing 70s & 80s face pack but these new face packs wil be a major upgrade in terms of quality of photos & content. Currently, I think I'm only 30 very obsure players short of the 1970s pack. I am going to hoepfully have it ready before the year is out. peace, max Continue

Glenn Higginbotham Peter Golenbock's "Bums: An Oral History of the Brooklyn Dodgers"

It came out in 1984, but I'm reading it for the first time. What a great book -- I'm learning so much about the players and the power brokers (MacPhail, Rickey, O'Malley etc).

The first thing that struck me was the continual power struggles that went on behind the scenes. The Brooklyn front office almost seemed like a small Latin American country, with periodic coups as one dictator after another seized control. To me, it's as fascinating as the game on the field.

The triumvirat

Glenn Higginbotham Brief Essay: Baseball In The Golden Age

The late 1940s and the 1950s are often portrayed as a time of happiness and accumulation of wealth by the post -WWII generation. That is partially true. What this image hides is the fall of the Iron Curtain, and the spectre of nuclear oblivion when our erstwhile allies the Russians acquired the ability to build atomic weapons.

In the midst of these threats, America found escape on the ballfields. Major league baseball enjoyed skyrocketing attendance in most of the years between 1946 an

Frozen Stiffer The Two Huffs

August 29th, 2013 - Havanna "rookie pitching sensation" (press' words, not ours) Laci Huff, called up from AAA during the offseason and assigned the #5 starter position, gets chased away early, giving up 10 runs on 8 hits over just 4 innings. He eventually took the loss (shocker), as even though we fought back, the game was lost 10-11.

September 4th, 2013 - Same "rookie pitching sensation" against the same team, at home this time, goes 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits, striking

Frozen Stiffer Eight.... teen is NOT enough

I just finished a game where my ace, Tomas Enfin, who's having some uncharacteristic difficulty this year, was starting. After beginning the year with a 9-1 record, Tomas is now 13-5. Though still a great record, it's his 2.40 ERA that's the most interesting.

I mention this because we just finished losing a game against the Topeka Marshalls, 2-0. In a losing effort, Enfin went all 9 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits and walking 2; pretty good numbers really. It was an utter lack of ru

Frozen Stiffer They Come In Waves

It's interesting how we can be fortunate enough to not experience any injuries for a prolonged amount of time, and then suddenly, over a 5-game span, I lose 3 of my starting pitchers to injury. !?!?!?

I suppose that "When it rains it pours..." or is that, when it strains it pours? It's for this reason that I am subscribing to Dave Dombrowski's eternal words of wisdom, "You can never have too much pitching".

This is why over the last post-season, I stocked up on some affo… Continue

Robbie Wartburg Can People be any more rude?

okay so last night i was working at the ballpark and they started the national anthem and we are all supposed to stop, well near where i was standing ther were these two guys that were handing out some sort of advertisements, and they were just talking to each other all through the anthem,it was unbeliveable and i gave them a sort of look that just said "could you be any more rude?" why do people have to be so rude when it comes to the national anthem? instead of respecting our country.
