Michael, I believe I recall you commented once that you had created several PCL associations, composed, I assume, of fictional players. I'm wondering if you ever tried to recreate REAL PCL players, even if only on a couple of teams, just for competition sake?...And, if so, how they fared against one another...Looking foreward to hearing from you...Lee

Portlanders do have a sense of history about such things, though there is very little discussion of the old Portland Beavers. As you may have heard, the new ownership considered renaming the current club to avoid confusion with Oregon State University's baseball program, then promptly changed its mind after a fan vote against it.

The same group owns a soccer club, the Timbers, in the United Soccer League (the minor league one level below Major League Soccer). The Timbers were the name of Portland's successful franchise in the North American Soccer League from 1975 until that league folded in 1983. The NASL was soccer's top US league at the time, and was the last stop on the road for legends like Pele and Franz Beckenbauer. Portland's team usually consisted of refugees from English clubs like Jimmy Conway and Clive Charles, who would stay in Portland and coach the women's side for the University of Portland to a national championship.

Michael--It's nice to know you're keeping the PCL in the forefront. The Seattle Rainiers, Portland Beavers, Oakland Oaks, SF Seals, Sacramento Solons, Los Angeles Angels, Hollywood Stars, and SD Padres all bring back pleasant memories. Many major league stars passed through on their way to the "bigs;" and others hung on during their subsequent descent. It's funny how a lot of these names still come to mind, despite the passage of time...Lee

My new experiences

Well, I now have my fukll copy of PureSDim running and it's working just splendidly. I think I've only scracthed the durface of what it can do.

There are, however, a couple of projects I wanted to try and see if they would work:

1. One of the first "modeled" associations I created was 1914, the first year of the Federal League. I still haven't quite figured out how to tell the scheduler that, no, it's THREE SEPARATE KLEAGUES not one big league nwith three eight-team divisions t… Continue
